“Majority of Celiac disease patients first read some or another articles then decided to go for a test and the test supported their doubt and finally they consult any dietitian. This is the situation in all over the world. ” Says dietitian Sheela Seharawat.  It is a diagnostic challenge as it doesn’t have one or a few symptoms so that doctor could directly say it is due to celiac disease. Symptoms are very common so it can be mistaken for a problem due to small reason so the disease goes mostly unnoticed.

Earlier it was assumed that it is only in European countries as they are very cold and the people there lack vitamin D which most Asian countries receive directly from the Sun but such belief has no legs. Celiac disease is also found in India.

Study found that like anywhere else Indians are also suffering from this disease and need more awareness and tests so they can also live better life. A recent study found that more than one percent of Indian population is suffering from this disease like in any other country.

This disease is very complicated in nature as it doesn’t give you anything such as clear indication that you can say one is ill badly but yes one continuously feels that there is something which is keeping one unhinged and unhealthy.

Patient suffers from headache, fatigue, body aches and abdominal pains. Such vague symptoms can be due to a minor problem too so mostly patient feels that it is all just in their head and they can be fine if they do not think much about all these things. But in fact they are sick and need medical and dietary help.”  Says dietitian Sheela Seherawat.

They can be facing some other things too like low concentration, diffused joint pains and swelling, irritable bowel syndrome, slow nail and hair growth, intermittent chest discomfort and cystic acne. These problems are again often seen separately and doctors also do not consider it as a big issue. Some people go in another direction with treatment like antidepressants, stress management, and some sort of exercise but all this effort just runs down the drain with no positive results.

Studies have found that Celiac disease can develop at any time during life. A person can have this disease right from 9 months to 99 years of age. Age is not an issue. The biggest challenge is that it can happen to infant babies too where it is hard to detect.

There is a clear indication that Celiac patient can be overweight. Studies have found that 20% of people who had Celiac disease had constipation and 10% were suffering from obesity, however any body shape person can have this disease. Even thin person can have it.

Celiac disease is a dangerous one and it is not something that one can just ignore as it can affect any part of the body like brain, reproductive system, bones, liver, joints, skin, and teeth.

It is also seen that that patients of celiac disease have a higher risk of headaches than the general population. It is good to have a test of celiac disease if one is suffering from chronic headaches.

It is also seen that patient of celiac disease do not necessarily have any digestive problem but they have other problems and they are suffering from diseases like arthritis, nerve inflammation (neuropathy), headaches, difficulty getting pregnant, and elevated liver enzymes.

Some researchers are of the view that there is a link between celiac disease and headaches as this disease makes inflammation that may spread to the brain and nervous system. There is also a possibility that it is due to deficiencies of vitamins B12, D, E, folic acid and pyridoxine or due to some bacterial imbalance in the body.

Hence, it is not very easy to say by seeing some reports whether one has celiac disease or not. You can see all these diseases above don’t indicate or leave any clue even to a doctor that patient can have Celiac disease and these are its symptoms. That is why the actual diagnosis is very difficult and it can take year or decades to firmly diagnose.

The test like endoscopy and small bowel biopsy definitely help in detecting this disease. As one patient is diagnosed with this Celiac disease then it is very important to take test of the other family members including children as there is a higher chance of having this problem in the family including aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents.

“These patients have to be very careful about their alcoholic intakes and so they have to know that they cannot drink any ordinary beer available in the market. In India I don’t think there is any beer which they can have. Yes, outside there are. They have some beers which are glutton free.” Says dietitian Sheela Seharawat.

Patient finds a lot of problems in eating during their first 2 years or more as the whole range of food is changed. Indeed there are also some patients who get diagnosed with Celiac disease and have started taking gluten free (GF) diet and even after months still the symptoms and complications continue; this usually happens only due to cross- contamination. This is known as Non – responsive celiac diseases, (NCRD). New researches are also being done for celiac drugs that can prevent the NRCD.

The best way to stay healthy after being diagnosed with Celiac disease is to stay away from gluten. It is necessary to eat gluten free diet and keep your kitchen clean of any gluten containing food.
