Protein is used by the body to build and maintain tissue and muscle mass. We need it to make enzymes and hormones. Consumption of sufficient protein is very important.
Dietician Sheela Sherawat, of Diet Clinic, explains - Proteins contribute amino acids. There are a large number of different amino acids but only twenty are used by the body for the production of proteins. Of these 20 amino acids, 11 can be made by the human body and 9 others are said to be essential because the body is unable to synthesize them in sufficient quantity to meet its needs. These amino acids must, therefore, be provided by protein in the diet.
